Secret Santa (also known as Kris Kringle in some circles) is a Western Christmas tradition in which members of a group or community are randomly assigned a person to whom they anonymously give a gift. It is one of the more popular holiday games that is fun and is an easy way for a group of friends, family members or work colleges to exchange gifts without breaking the budget.

Basically the concept of Secret Santa is simple. Participants’ names are placed into a box and mixed, then each person chooses one name from the box. You are not allowed to have your own name so if you draw yourself you must place your name back into the box and draw again. It’s against the rules to tell anyone which name you have drawn (except for my husband David who sometimes needs some gift suggestions). You are now responsible for purchasing that person a gift.

When you wrap the gift it should be wrapped in such a way as to disguise who the giver is. It needs to be labelled with the recipient’s name but don’t put who it is from (remember, a lot of the fun is in the secrecy). All the gifts are then placed in a general area and players take turns to open their gift and to try and guess who their Secret Santa is.

Secret Santa has been our family tradition for the past few years now. As a family we always get together for my Father in laws birthday at the end of September, so while the family is together it’s a great opportunity to do the draw. We place everyone’s name into a box and take turns in drawing out a name. We only do the adults, but you can chose what’s best for you and your family. This in itself is a heap of fun and is sure to get a lot of animated reactions and non-stop laughs. We’ve placed a $100 limit on the gift and part of the challenge is to see how creative you can be with you $100. Again, you can chose an amount what’s best for you and your family. Last year I was the Secret Santa for my beautiful mother in law, Christine. I wanted to give her something to show how much she means to me so I made her a Do It Yourself Desk Calendar. I personalised it by adding photos of her friends and family. Drawings, messages and all of our family’s members birthdays. I wanted to give her something as unique as her! With the rest of the money I purchased some of her favourite cosmetics. Christine absolutely loved it and I loved making it for her. It’s so much fun watching each other open gifts, trying to guess who it is from, looking to see if you can recognise the writing on cards or to see if one of the kids’ gifts are wrapped in then same printed paper. It brings a lot of joy to our Christmas Day and will yours too.

This year’s Secret Santa I drew my ……………………….., someone I love dearly. I’m really excited about being their Secret Santa! I’ve had a lot of fun thinking about their gift, finding it and planning on how I will wrap it so they won’t know it’s from me.

Ho Ho Ho!

I also love not knowing who the gift for me is from too. I love that they have invested the thought, time and money into the gift. It doesn’t really matter what it is, most of all, I know the gift contains lots of love. And that’s exactly what’s it’s all about!
